About the project

Agro-pastoral conflicts linked to transhumance have become a global concern due to the double aspect of insecurity in the Lake Chad region, but also due to the economic and social stakes that the practice of transhumance has for many populations. These issues are all the more important as these conflicts are accompanied in most cases by the death of men, the destruction of animals and brawls between communities, often of several parties. The project aimed to reduce conflicts related to the use of natural resources for agro-pastoral practices in the East, Adamaoua and North regions. It constitutes the missing link in the chain of interventions on the issue of agro-pastoral conflicts concerning the Cameroon/Chad/Central Africa/Sudan transhumance corridors. In doing so, it fits into the global sub-regional dynamics of transhumance management prescribed in the political momentum created by the N'Djaména declaration of January 2019 bringing together the stakeholders of the countries sharing Lake Chad and which prescribes, among others:

  • To develop integrated, income-generating programmes and projects for communities living in the vicinity of protected areas and for transhumant herders
  • To materialise and secure the national and cross-border transhumance corridors
  • Design an adequate legal framework for better governance and efficient management of transhumance
  • Conduct studies on the economic, social, political and security dynamics in order to improve understanding of the issues related to transhumance
